The only pizza dough recipe you will ever need.
It’s Pizza Time!
I have never been big on baking because I prefer savory dishes, BUT I’m THE best at making pizza dough. This recipe is my favorite because it’s so versatile and easy to work with; this pizza dough recipe is a must try. It’s got just the right amount of flavor and bounce that makes it perfect for pairing with your favorite pizza toppings or just eating plain as breadsticks!
First, make sure your yeast is alive.
To make sure your yeast is alive and kicking, mix it with the measured sugar and warm water. If the mixture foams up after 5-10 minutes, you’re good to go!
Mix the ingredients together.
Mix the dry ingredients together.
- Sift together the flour and salt.
- Add in the yeast water mixture.
- Mix until the you form a soft dough that is not sticky to touch but no longer feels dry or crumbly
Tips and Tricks to making your pizza dough perfect.
To mix, use a stand mixer or bread machine to combine all the ingredients. Mix on low for about three minutes, then increase to medium for about five minutes. The dough should roll out easily and be smooth and elastic when you’re done mixing it. If it’s still really sticky, add a little more flour until it feels like soft play dough that pulls away from your hands when you pinch it (but isn’t dry).
Rest your pizza dough.
Oil a bowl, add in your dough, cover and let rise for 1 hour or until the dough doubles in size.
Trouble Shooting.
If you are using a mixer, remove the dough from the bowl and knead on a lightly floured surface for 5 minutes. The dough will be soft but not sticky. Too sticky? add more flour as needed. If it seems dry, add 1 tablespoon water at a time until it becomes soft and elastic.
If you are mixing by hand, knead in enough flour to make a soft but not sticky dough. Knead for 10 minutes until smooth and elastic, adding additional flour if necessary.
Form the dough into two balls with greased hands that have been dipped into warm water (or if you’re feeling fancy: use plastic wrap) and place them in lightly greased bowls covered with plastic wrap or damp tea towel; let rise until doubled in size (about 45 minutes- 2 hours depending on your environment).
Punch your pizza dough down.
Now that you have let your dough rise, it’s time to punch it down. This is just a fancy way of saying “take your fist and hit the dough as hard as possible.” In fact, if you have a rolling pin handy, feel free to use one instead—the idea is just to flatten out the dough so that it takes up less room in the bowl.
If you’d rather not get too violent with your pizza dough (and I can’t blame you), then just let it sit another 30 minutes before making a fresh batch of sauce and toppings.
Roll it out. This pizza dough recipe makes enough for two 10-inch pizzas.
Roll out the dough to the desired thickness. You can use a rolling pin for this, but if you don’t have one, don’t worry! A wine bottle works just fine for this purpose. Roll it out until it’s as thin as you want your crust to be.
